Plus Size Dance Pole & DVD Recommendations by: Your Pole Pal
Thanks for your question, and welcome to the wonderful world of pole dancing!
I addressed a similar question recently from someone who discovered after buying a pole that it had a 180 pound weight limit. You may find some helpful tips in my response to her about pole dancing for a plus size woman.
To sum up though, I would recommend either a permanent pole dancing pole or a removable dance pole, for maximum safety and to increase your confidence in your pole. You can read details about why I recommend these two types of poles in the post referenced above.
While I don't know of an online supplier of permanent dance poles, you may be able to source the parts needed locally. You'll need two flanges (one for the floor and one for the ceiling), screws, and a length of metal tubing (stainless steel or brass) the height of your ceiling.
Despite their high safety rating and weight limit however, a permanent pole is not the solution for everyone. If you want to be able to take your pole down, or move it to another location, having it screwed into your floor and ceiling can be a real pain.
That's why I find a removable - or semi-permanent - pole is an excellent compromise. You get the flexibility of a friction fit pole, and a very close approximation of the safety of a permanent pole.
Currently, Lil Mynx makes the only true semi-permanent pole that I'm aware of. It has a stated weight limit of 200 lbs, but is definitely more secure than any of the friction fit models that claim higher weight limits. Plus Size Dance Pole & DVD Recommendations Pt 2 by: Your Pole Pal
Now on to DVD recommendations for you! As a plus size pole dancer who I'll assume is a beginner, you're going to find there's a fairly limited selection of DVDs that are suitable for you. But there are a couple I can suggest.
A number of years ago, when pole dancing for fitness was still a very new concept, a now-defunct company called A Pole Lot of Fun released a DVD called Pole Dancing For Real Women. A lot of feedback on this DVD is mediocre, but keep in mind that it was made for "real women" not gymnasts or dancers. It's meant as a very basic introduction to pole dancing so it doesn't have any advanced tricks or difficult moves. Many people don't like it for that reason, as they feel it's too basic. But there has been some good feedback from plus size women who say it's a great starting point for them.
Unfortunately, this DVD is out of production now, but you may be able to find a used copy on Amazon or eBay.
Another DVD by the same company is Salsa Pole. Again, this one is not targeted to people wanting to learn tricks; it was produced as a fusion of two dance styles and sticks to the dance aspect more so than tricks. It does include one spin, so something for the plus size beginner to work up to. Unfortunately, it's also out of print, though used copies may be available.
And finally, I'll put in a shameless plug for the Pole Fitness DVD Series. I created this set of 3 DVDs to help pole dancers of all levels get stronger, more flexible and to get a fun, fat burning cardio working using simple pole dancing moves. It's definitely suitable for beginners, plus size ladies, and anyone who wants to learn how to use their dance pole as a vertical home gym...with no crazy tricks or acrobatics required.
And there you have it, my top 3 picks for plus size pole DVDs!
